Mars Hills

So, there are two American Evangelical Christian churches, unaffiliated with each other with the same name: Mars Hill

The one (in Michigan), founded by Rob Bell (who did the excellent NOOMA videos, available on YouTube), teaches that God loves everyone and believes that “Love Wins”.  Bell was criticized last year for his book “Love Wins” because he explores the concept that perhaps everyone gets into Heaven, eventually. (He did not take a specific stance on what he believes.)

The evangelical community tore him a new asshole over this. It was heresy. He was a universalist (only they used it as an epithet, he’s denied being a universalist).  Eventually, he quit his church last year to go on to different preaching opportunities.

The other Mars Hill is in Seattle and is run by a man named Mark Driscoll. Mark Driscoll believes in the complementarian view of the sexes. Women should be subservient to men.

He also is very big into men’s stuff. He derides most of Christianity as being too feminized and not manly enough. He’s the clerical version of the “Internet Tough Guy”.  I guess his Jesus wasn’t into all of that femmey love and compassion stuff.

Driscoll was also criticized for some disciplinary issues on members of his church that attracted some national attention. (It was featured in Slate.com)

If you know anything about me, you can probably tell by now that I’m a big fan of Rob Bell (despite me being a Universalist and him not) and not a fan at all of Mark Driscoll.

It’s odd to see two preachers, who could not be different, pick the same name for their church.

If given the choice, however, I’ll always go with “Love Wins”…
