Removing God From Our Schools

After yesterday’s senseless tragedy in Newtown, CT, a number of people went to the media and gave their theories about why this happened. Some said it was due to a lack of gun control, some said it was due to a lack of mental health funding.

Then we have assholes like Mike Huckabee who say it’s because we’ve removed God from our schools.

Here’s what I do not understand:  How can you believe in a God that is omnipresent and omnipotent and claim that somehow humanity ‘removed God from our schools’?

If you believe in an omnipresent God, it is impossible to remove God from our schools.

What Huckabee is referring to here is theocracy. He wants his religion to be forced onto children in public schools. I guarantee you that he wouldn’t be OK with prayer in schools if it involved Muslim prayers or that of any non-Christian religion.

He wants public schools to be Christian. Furthermore, he thinks the reason why there are mass killings and school shootings is due to the lack of enforced school prayer.

Prayer has never been absent from school as long as the children are raised by their parents to pray and believe in prayer. Children who believe in prayer will pray quietly to themselves as it should be. Why should we enforce religion upon those who do not believe it? We criticize countries like Saudi Arabia for enforcing their strict moral religion-based values upon their people, but think it’s OK to do that as long as it’s Christianity and based on your particular interpretation of Scripture?

Sorry, but I don’t accept that. And I think it’s shitty to do this in the wake of a massive tragedy. We don’t know what the answer is, but imposing religion on children is not the solution.
