Long Piece on Scientology

I am fascinated by this.

I love reading about Scientology. I think both Rathbun and the CoS are unreliable here, though. The CoS continues to never admit wrongdoing. Given the amount of evidence of their activities in other situations, it seems reasonable to assume that they’ve done plenty that they’d never admit to. Rathbun, I think, underplays his role in these events.

If one buys into Hubbard’s teachings as completely as Rathbun does, can they be a reliable narrator? Can someone who trusted Miscavige so much and was complicit in many of Scientology’s wrongdoings be reliable now? Rathbun seems to blame everything on Miscavige or people working below himself taking their own initiative. He doesn’t admit to wrongdoing when confronted.

I wonder how severe the disconnect is.

That said, I wonder what will happen to Scientology when Miscavige dies. The success of Scientology is baffling yet endlessly fascinating.
