I don’t really relate to Samhain anymore.

When I was a beginner Pagan, celebrating Samhain made me feel witchy. I felt as if I was part of some sort of secret revival to worship the ancient gods. Of course, it was all bullshit.

Halloween, on the other hand, I still love.

Halloween is a part of my tradition. I have fond memories of celebrating Halloween with my family. It can be spooky and cheesy. It can be a way to experiment with identity or flout gender roles, or a way to get into the head of a favorite character you love. Either way, I associate it with fun, celebration, and spooky shit. All of which I have no desire to give up.

If we want to remember our ancestors at this time, we can do so. I think it’s as good a time as any to do that. But it doesn’t have to take away from Halloween. I understand that Halloween isn’t something that everyone loves. Many Pagans aren’t into spooky shit. That’s fine. You do you.
