Brigid’s Altar

When my partner and I moved into our new apartment, I was happy to find out that my bedroom closet was large enough to sit in and had shelves.

I knew it would make a perfect worship space.

I love small, intimate worship spaces. Areas that can be closed off and not used for anything else. While this is still my closet, there’s enough space that I can keep my things on one side and have my worship space on another.

I can close the door and with the light off, it’s very dark, then light a candle symbolizing Brigid’s Light and feel a difference.

There is still more I’d like to do with the space, but I took photos to show what I have so far.

There are two shelves.

One is the actual worship space with a framed image of Brigid. To the left is a small image of Brigid in Her Christian Saint form. It’s an icon of Saints Brigid and Darlughdach by Br. Robert Lentz of Trinity Christian Stores (known for social justice themed Christian icons).

The lantern is what I use to symbolize Brigid’s Light. In front of Her image, I also have two oil lamps (currently burning olive oil). To the right is a T-shirt that no longer fits me with a prayer to Brigid.

The bottom shelf is for my own use. It has a tea light candle (so I can read), a fermenting crock that I will sometimes use as Brigid’s Well for offerings. Then, the Clann Bhride Book of Hours for a prayerbook and something I printed off from Gaol Naofa for daily worship.

It’s a work-in-progress, but I’m happy with it thus far.

  1. Thanks for sharing pics of your devotional space! I think a word is missing from your opening sentence above, which reads, “When my partner and I moved into our new apartment, I was happy to find out that my bedroom was large enough to sit in and had shelves.” I like the way you have used your closet space. šŸ™‚
